Best Man Speeches

Best Man Speeches

I remember the occasion well; my brother - I was staying with him and his then girlfriend near London for a few days - had cooked roast beef with all the trimmings for Sunday lunch and we were happily chatting in the glow of a decent bottle of red wine. Suddenly the conversation switched to his wedding, to take place some 10 months later, and then there it was… he asked me to be best man!

Since I hadn't expected to be asked I was genuinely honored; for about a second, anyway. When it stuck me that it meant giving a speech - and since the wedding was to take place in the south of Spain I'd have to do it in English AND Spanish - that feeling of honor vanished and was suddenly replaced by dread.

The good news is that however nerve-wracking it seemed 10 months before the wedding, on the day everything went perfectly. In fact it was the second time I'd been best man, and although the first time it also went well (which is more than I can say for the marriage), the speech I gave at my brother's wedding was much better, with many people complementing me on the speech and one old family friend telling me that all the best man speeches he's ever done he'd messed up and how well I'd done!

But the best thing was that there really is nothing like having a captive audience laugh at your jokes and really seem to enjoy what you're saying; a great plus is that much of that humor is at the expense of the groom J

Anyway, remember that everyone at a wedding want to enjoy themselves, and so they're 100% behind you when you speak - they really do want to be entertained and have a good time, so remember that when you are writing your speech, you're speaking to entertain.

Think about what you know about the groom, what his likes and dislikes, funny situations you know he's found himself in. Even if they're not the best stories in the world you can dress them up a bit to achieve the right. But be careful not to overstep the mark and what is acceptable to some people may be offensive to others - have fun a t the groom's expense but don't go too far.

On the wedding day, just try and relax and enjoy it. Both the weddings I was best man for, I was more nervous about dropping the rings than the best man speeches themselves. Once the ceremony is over it is just one big party, and remember that once everyone has downed a coupler of glasses it doesn't matter how nervous you are you'll still get a laugh.
